Memories of David Hamilton

One year has past since our last video with pictures of Max, chosen by the great master of light David Hamilton.

Without any question Max can be seen as the successor of David. He constantly tries to perfect his style and invents new techniques, enriching the genre of romantic photography.

From time to time Max showed his pictures to David Hamilton who gave his critique.
In this video meant to honor the death annual of David we have put some of the finest photographies of Max, rated as very well done by David himself.

The premiere of the video will take place tonight on 19:00 CET on the youtube channel of the Atelier Stolzenberg.

 

 

We want you to draw your attention especially to the following picture in the video.

It has been done by Max in a way that it almost looks like a painting.
We can assure you that no filters, neither analog nor digital, have been used to shoot this picture!
Just a simple analog 35mm camera, a single manual focus lens and the talent of Max and the beautiful jeunes filles as well as the beautiful light of south France created this picture.

This new technique was developed by Max and discussed with David just before his death.

It is no secret that Max often uses his old Minolta SRT-101 or X-700. This cameras are just the same camera that David used during the time he directed Bilitis and later in the mid eighties.

Ah! La première bouffée matinale d’air frais, au début du printemps,
dans une ville aimée! Pourtant le jeune homme que j’étais,
sautant sur le quai de Santa Lucia, n’était déjà plus celui qui était
monté dans un train, la veille, à Paris. Chaque syllabe que l’on a
prononcée, chaque caresse que l’on a esquissée, chaque voyage
que l’on a accompli ont été commencés lors d’un instant qui a
immédiatement été englouti par le passé. Ils ont été achevés à
un moment qui, tout pareillement, a basculé dans l’autrefois. Le
présent n’existe pas. Ou alors, seul le présent existe. Marly-le-Roi,
Berre-des-Alpes, Arromanches, Venise, Florence, les lieux qui ont
compté pour moi, n’ont guère pu s’incarner que dans mon désir
d’eux. Ils ne pourront plus exister que dans la nostalgie qu’ils
m’inspirent.
Il n’y a presque jamais eu d’éternité suspendue, entre le
passé disparu sans retour et l’inaccessible avenir. Pourtant, chaque
mercredi du mois de mars 1978, avant les boums de la MJC des
Grandes Terres, je faisais tourner sur mon électrophone Thorens
d’anciens 33 tours. Je suis peut-être encore là-bas, dans ma chambre
du 7 square des Aubades, épiant à travers les fentes de mes
volets l’arrivée de Véronique et Corinne.
Ah! Qui nous rendra les longs regards et les sourires timides
d’une écolière de quatorze ans à la voix fluette sous le ciel des
banlieues parigotes, mâchonnant peut-être sans malice un crayon,
bâclant ses devoirs à la table d’un café, cachée derrière la cascade
de ses cheveux qui se répandent sur son cahier? “Qu’est-ce que
tu étudies?” lui demandais-je. Elle levait vers moi ses grands yeux
brillants et purs et répondait: “Les sentiments”. Printemps de david-
hamiltonienne lumière…
J’écris pour moi seul; le souvenir que j’ai de la luminosité de
ce mois de mars marlychois, de l’odeur des pelouses gonflées par
la pluie, de mes états d’âme, voilà quelque chose de beaucoup
plus important, à mes yeux, que les ignominies qui ont passionné
les masses du vingtième siècle.

Ah! The first morning breath of fresh air in early spring,
in a beloved city! Yet as a young man as I was,
jumping on the Santa Lucia dock, was no longer the one who was
on a train the day before in Paris. Every syllable we have
pronounced, every caress we’ve sketched, every journey
that we have accomplished were started in a moment that has
immediately swallowed up in the past. They were completed in
a moment that, likewise, has shifted to the past. The
present does not exist. Or else, only the present exists. Marly the King,
Berre-des-Alpes, Arromanches, Venice, Florence, the places that have
counted for me, could only be incarnated in my desire
of them. They can only exist in the nostalgia they feel
inspire me.
There has almost never been a suspended eternity between the
past disappeared without return and the inaccessible future. However, each
Wednesday in March 1978, before the MJC booms of the
Grandes Terres, I used to play on my Thorens record player
old LPs. Maybe I’m still there, in my room.

Une dernière leçon de mon école

Olivier Mathieu, who was just writing his next book, asked Max if he could do the cover photo.
Of course Max agreed and so he went out with Bilitis and Annette (who assisted Max and also did the making of picture) into the nature, for a book cover photoshoot.

“We where very lucky to have some sun because otherwise it would have been impossible to do the shooting outside” Max says.

It was indeed the only warm day during the last three weeks.
The shooting took place on three different places and Olivier asked Max to have his last book “Je crie à toutes filles mercies featured on the photo.

The title of the new book will be “Une dernière leçon de mon école” which can be translated as “A last lesson of my school” and refers to the great poet François Villon.

Here are the four suggestions of Max from which Olivier and the publisher chose one.


We do not reveal which photo the cover finally will show. The text will be slightly different in the final version.

“It came out very beautiful and they chose the photo that was my favorite too. It was done in a beautiful hamiltonian light and with a great pose of the girl” Max states.

The book will be printed in a very limited and numbered edition of 300 books. There will be no second edition. It will be a bibliographic rarity.

From this already very limited number of books there will be only 20 copies which are personally autographed by Olivier Mathieu and Max Stolzenberg.

Bilitis and Maria in the Azores

We asked Max to tell us about his journey to the Azores island of Terceira and here is his story.

 

It was a beautiful sunny December day when Bilitis and me landed on Lajes airfield.
I was totally surprised how warm it was. We had 21 and on one day even 24 degrees which I think is a bit unusual for winter in the Azores. I was very eager to see the island and especially the coast part where David Hamilton had shot some of his iconic pictures.

We first took a ride to our little house that I had rented for our stay and left the luggage there.
The view from the house was phenomenal. Green meadows with horses and stone walls up to the point where the horizon met the Atlantic ocean.
The style of the buildings look like a town in Portugal or even Mexico and the landscape is a perfect copy of south England. Very exciting!
We where overwhelmed by the beauty of the island and made a walk from the house to the cliffs before went to Angra do Heroismo, the capital of the island, to take a dinner at a restaurant.

Maria was still working with the horses and we met her later that night. She lived in a small house not far from us and we where so happy to see her again after more then 3 months. We decided to meet again at the farm the next day.
From then on it was all about making beautiful photos and you could hear the shutter of my camera all day long.

What I liked most about the island was the naturally and the slow and relaxed life the people lived. It is also a very tidy place with a beautiful fauna and flora.
All kind of birds where singing in the sky and the animals where very tame and friendly.

As always the time was much too short to see everything we wanted to see. Maybe this is a reason to go to Terceira again one day? We will see.

One of the most exciting moments occurred when Bilitis met some deer in a forest. The beautiful animals followed her to a glade at the top of a hill and I was able to take a photo of her lending a hand to one of the deers that had surrounded her. A truly magic moment!

I hope you enjoy the pictures and the short video with the wonderful music of Stelvio Cipriani as much as I enjoyed our stay and the time we spent with Maria.

 

 

Olivier Mathieu sent me one of his poems from his book “Les jeunes filles ont l’âge de mon exil” which he thinks goes well together with the pictures.

He dedicates it to Maria and Bilitis.

Les filles ont l’épaule lisse,
Blonde et douce, les filles ont.
Et j’aimai que leur peau frémisse
Et leurs cheveux fleurant très bon,
Quand leur parfum est comme un baume.
Jeux de Gentils, les Jeux des Paumes.
Aux seins leurs robes suspendues
Glissent, bon Maître,
Quand d’un doigt habile on décroche
L’agrafe qui les laisse nues.
C’est hier que l’on aurait pu,
Qui sait ce qu’il aurait fallu?
